A New Tweed Chair

I found this mid-century tweed chair at an estate sale a couple of weekends ago and couldn’t wait until my monthly Thrift Store Finds recap to share it.

You see, I’ve been searching for a chair to replace this antique store find ever since Eliana mistook the wicker as a pull-toy. I had been looking for quite a while when I finally decided we did not need an arm chair – we rarely used it anyway. Of course after I had come to terms with that, I spotted this in the back of a dark, old house and decided that, indeed, we could use an arm chair!

After getting all territorial with it – I wouldn’t even leave the room – I brought it home for $4. I was beyond ecstatic – silly really, over a chair – and extremely thankful for Jesus’ perfect timing that teaches me to be patient for longer than I am usually willing to be.

This old chair needs some help; it wobbles due to a crooked leg, the original tweed is longing for some TLC, and the legs need refinishing, but it has good bones and an even better shape. I’ve already given it a thorough vacuuming and sanded down one leg – I was just too excited to wait!

As for cleaning the fabric, I’ve heard good things about Tuff Stuff and also about diluted laundry detergent – but I have bad experiences with washing upholstery so I am pretty hesitant. I could always have it reupholstered (or do it myself?) but I’d rather live with the tweed until I’m willing to pay for quality fabric.

So, what do you think?! Do you have any experience with washing upholstery? I’ll take any advice I can get!
