DIY Triangle Garlands

I’ve been on a garland kick lately. As in I can’t stop thinking about all the different garlands I could make and hang. My house is nearly covered in garlands, in preparation for my son’s birthday party of course, but I’m not completely sure I’ll take them down after that. I even hung garlands at a picnic after running out of room in our home.

Triangle Garlands

These triangle and diamond garlands have found a special place in my heart. If I were to pick favorites (which I totally am), these would be it (which they totally are). I was initially inspired by Design Love Fest’s DIY festive garlands but after a cutting mistake, ended up with the pinkish triangle shape that I love even more.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cardstock paper. I used three pink, two and half blue and two yellow.
  • A ruler, pencil, and scissors
  • A sewing machine

For the pink triangle (there’s an official name for it but I wasn’t an A student in geometry), cut 2-inch strips from the cardstock. On the top and bottom edge of the strip, measure and mark every 2 inches. Then, cut at an angle from the first mark to the corner, then a straight line from two of the marks. Repeat. Once all of your triangles are made, simply sew them together done the center.

For the blue triangle, again cut 2-inch strips from the cardstock. On the top edge, measure and mark every 2 inches starting from the very edge of the strip. On the bottom, measure in 1 inch from the side, then measure and mark every 2 inches after that. Cut the triangles by basically connecting the dots then sew down the center of the triangles with a sewing machine.

The diamond garland was a bit more difficult to measure and unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of the steps. To make it easy I traced a diamond shape from Google images onto a piece of scrap paper, then I cut it down to a size I was happy with, which was 1 1/2-inch by 1-1/2 inch. I cut my cardstock into 1-1/2 inch strips, then traced my diamond shape onto the strips for a guide.

They were really simple to make but took some time and patience. The work was easy and repetitive and it went pretty fast once I stayed focused and had no interruptions. Seriously, nap times are such a blessing.

Triangle Garland Final

Along with being easy to make, they were also easy on my wallet. I bought the cardstock when it was on sale for 20 cents per sheet at Joann Fabrics making the total $1.60 plus the cost of the sewing thread used. It may take some seriously effort to keep myself from making more and now I am thinking to myself, could I pull off hanging garlands year-round? What do you think?
