DIY Geometric Coasters with BIC Merry Marking

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of BIC®. All opinions are 100% mine.

Yearly, I deal with – what I like to call – my DIY gift dilemma. I always have these grand ideas to make plenty of DIY gifts and then, in the blink of an eye, it’s a week before Christmas. The projects I always intend on making either take too much time during the busy season of the holiday’s or are a bit too much money than I’m wanting to spend.

This year especially, I needed a quick DIY gift idea that is both good to look at and easy to make. So when BIC contacted me about participating in their Month of Merry Marking by completing an inspiration challenge, I was all ears.

They asked me to create coasters using a color (or two) from their Mark-It™ Permanent Markers so naturally I went with geometric coasters spruced up with Midnight Navy and Silver.

Coasters

Granted, my hexagons are far from geometrically correct but I still think they hit the nail on the head. I love how they came out. Did I mentioned they were easy to make? As in, pretty dang easy.

Find out how after the jump.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1/8th-inch craft plywood (found here or at your local craft store)
BIC Mark-It™ Permanent Markers (I used Midnight Navy and Silver)
Power Saw
Sandpaper
Acrylic Spray Sealer (found here)

How-To:

First, trace out hexagon shapes on your piece of plywood. I printed out a picture of a hexagon and traced it to the best of my ability (which obviously doesn’t say much).

Then using a saw, cut out the shapes you traced. My father-in-law did this for me using his miter saw.
Smooth out the cut coasters with sandpaper. I started with 80 grit and finished with 220 grit for a super smooth surface.

Once the coasters are all sanded, decide on a pattern to draw like on the coasters. I kept it simple and love how it came out.

Finally, seal the coasters with the spray sealer to protect them from water damage.

Helpful Tips: I noticed the Midnight Navy looked best when I drew a line along the wood grain. When I went across the grain, the line bled. BIC’s Metallic Mark-Its™, however, hold up just fine when going across the grain. Keep this in mind if the design calls for drawing against the grain.

I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty excited about these permanent markers. The color choices create endless possibilities. In fact, BIC came up with some insprirational challenges to get your creative juices flowing. You can get the booklet of merry marking and a coupon to start marking here.

So who wants to join in on the creative challenge? Let’s say I nominate all of you to participate and create something fun with BIC Mark-It™ Markers. If you do end up creating something with these markers, don’t forget to share it on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #BICMerryMarking. Also, hashtag the color you choose (as in, #MidnightNavy).
